Discover Western Montana’s Local Food & Farms

The Western Montana Food & Farm Trail is an invitation to explore the land, flavors, and people behind our region’s local food. Spanning the Bitterroot, Missoula, and Flathead Valleys, this new initiative connects visitors with farms, markets, value-added producers, and locally sourced restaurants in an interactive and engaging way—guided by a printed passport and digital map that make exploring local food easy, fun, and accessible. With curated itineraries, Trail events, and a hands-on stamp-collecting experience, the Trail offers a joyful, place-based way for locals and travelers alike to meet growers, taste what’s in season, and support Western Montana’s agricultural community.

About the Trail

Our goal is to create a long-lasting regional program that will grow and evolve over time. In this first iteration, the Trail will run May–October 2026 and will include:

  • FREE participation for farms and locally sourced food businesses, thanks to USDA Farmers Market Promotion Program (FMPP) funding
  • A locally designed printed passport ($10–15/booklet) featuring a hands-on stamp-collecting experience, illustrated regional maps, business listings, and curated itineraries
  • An interactive digital map hosted by Abundant Montana
  • Launch events in each valley
  • Regional exposure across social media and coordinated Trail promotions

Why We’ve Created the Trail

1) To bring more people to farms and markets — and support agritourism.
The Trail gives locals and visitors a fun, intentional, and interactive way to plan farm visits and food adventures. The stamp-collecting experience encourages exploration of new farms, restaurants, and vendors, while promotions and prizes add excitement and incentive.

The Trail serves as:

  • a weekend planner and activity for families,
  • a resource for travelers,
  • an interactive guide to farms and local food, and
  • a revenue booster for farms and food businesses.

2) To give farms (and the food businesses who support them) high-quality promotion — for FREE.
Farmers and producers rarely have time for marketing. This project provides:

  • regional visibility,
  • coordinated multi-partner promotion,
  • and a branded, ready-made platform to showcase your offerings — all at no cost to participants.

3) To reconnect people with food, land, and community.
The Trail helps strengthen the relationships that make our regional food network resilient. It also helps people understand:

  • where their food comes from,
  • who grows it, and
  • how to support a thriving local food system.

Be Part of the Trail

  • Farms open for visits, u-picks, farmstands
  • Farmers markets, market vendors, CSAs and locally sourced food businesses
  • Agritourism experiences (tours, workshops, farm-to-table dinners, events, etc.)
  • Restaurants, food trucks, and craft beverage purveyors with strong local sourcing

To participate, you simply need to:

  • Have a physical location where visitors can collect a passport stamp (staffed or self-serve). Farm Connect provides stamps and materials.
  • Complete a short sign-up form — it takes 5 minutes. We handle the rest.
